The Hastings Mutual Insurance Company Charitable Foundation recognizes the contributions of nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve. Each month, we’ll honor one of those organizations as our Nonprofit of the Month.
If you donate items to certain charitable organizations, they’ll sort though the clothes, old toys, books, or whatever else you’re giving away and sell what they can. The money from those sales go to help their staff and others in need. Habitat for Humanity sells items at the ReStore, where shoppers can find everything from shoes to kitchen tools to movies on DVD (and VHS, for people who still have that old-fashioned technology).
Items are sometimes picked up by Habitat for Humanity staff and volunteers using a box truck big enough to hold a couch or a set of containers full of old t-shirts. At the ReStore in Adrian, Michigan, near Ann Arbor, it’s time for a new box truck, one that’s safer and more modern — their current truck has more than 230,000 miles on it and is regularly out of service for repairs.
It’s especially helpful in the greater Adrian area and throughout Lenawee County where, as Habitat staff note, many people are getting older. While they want to support their community, it’s challenging for seniors to bring items to the ReStore. That means the truck “provides Habitat with access to a larger quantity of high-quality donations from diverse areas of the county.”
Habitat for Humanity of Lenawee County is supported by Hastings Mutual and Kemner Iott Benz.
