The Hastings Mutual Insurance Company Charitable Foundation recognizes the contributions of nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve. Each month, we’ll honor one of those organizations as our Nonprofit of the Month.
Summer camp, for many boys and girls, is something to look forward to all year. This year, of course, it’s not as easy as grabbing a sleeping bag and fishing pole on the way to the campground. Our Nonprofit of the Month, Camp Roger in Rockford, MI, and its sister site, Camp Scottie in Howard City, MI, had to make a change this summer, like nearly everything and everyone else around the world.
Their usual summer camp is now “GO Camp”: outdoors, during the day, in small groups, with extra safety precautions. A lot of activities don’t require a large number of people together in a small area — kids can sit at separate tables for arts and crafts, everyone’s on their own at the archery range, and there’s plenty of room at summer camp for campers to stay socially distant and still play games.
The way camp is set up has changed, but the goal is still the same — as the website for Camp Roger and Camp Scottie notes, “GO stands for Get Outside. And that’s what we’re going to do!”
Camp Roger is supported by Hastings Mutual and Berends Hendricks Stuit.
