Nonprofit of the Month — New City Kids

The Hastings Mutual Insurance Company Charitable Foundation recognizes the contributions of nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve. Each month, we’ll honor one of those organizations as our Nonprofit of the Month.

After school ends every day, many kids head to a community program, where they can play or do homework until it’s time for a parent to pick them up. New City Kids is one of those programs — but it’s for a particular audience, lower-income families in urban areas. Founded in New Jersey, New City Kids also has a branch in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and plans to expand throughout the U.S.

In a New City Kids After School Center, children in first through eighth grade can continue working on the day’s homework, and learn even more in special math, grammar, and geography classes held during the program. They also have the opportunity to learn music (piano, drums, guitar, and singing) as well as recreation, kickboxing, photography, drama, and dance. Each after school program is run by adults while teen volunteers interact with students daily.

New City Kids in Grand Rapids was founded in 2014, after almost two decades of similar programs in New Jersey. They estimate that hundreds of students in New City Kids programs are the first generation in their families to attend college.
