Nonprofit of the Month: Nutrition on Weekends
Apr 29, 2020, 1:42 PM
Children who only eat at school need food at home. We’re contributing to those who help.
The Hastings Mutual Insurance Company Charitable Foundation recognizes the contributions of nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve. Each month, we’ll honor one of those organizations as our Nonprofit of the Month.
Our Charitable Foundation recognizes different organizations in our six-state region that help their communities. They all offer support and resources for those in need. Many organizations we work with provide something that’s absolutely vital — food for children.
Nutrition On Weekends in Marshfield, Wisconsin, is one example. Like many organizations we support, they prepare lunches (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, carrots, and fruit) for children who otherwise might not have food on the weekend. Schools offer free or reduced lunch during school days (and are also providing food now that schools are closed because of COVID-19), but food is sometimes unavailable on Saturdays and Sundays. In some schools, more than 20 percent of students report going to bed hungry at least once in the past month because there wasn’t enough food at home.
Organizers of Nutrition On Weekends say they concentrate on organizing volunteers to make the meals and distribute them. The program was started by the Marshfield Area United Way in 2013, and has fed more than 550 children from more than a dozen local schools in recent years.
Nutrition On Weekends is supported by Hastings Mutual and
Dallman Insurance (Greenwood WI).
