The Hastings Mutual Insurance Company Charitable Foundation recognizes the contributions of nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve. Each month, we’ll honor one of those organizations as our Nonprofit of the Month.
Spectrum Health’s United Lifestyles Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP) takes care of the families taking care of their new babies. More than half of all births in Michigan’s Montcalm County, near the center of the state’s Lower Peninsula, are to women insured through Medicaid. They are the women the MIHP wants to help.
In the program, a team of medical and care professionals visits pregnant women and those who have recently given birth. They include a:
With access to such a wide range of skills, women in the program are able to benefit several ways before and after their baby is born. They learn how to find and prepare healthy food, manage existing health problems like asthma or depression, and have aid if they’re in an abusive or violent situation. Women are also linked to other forms of assistance like baby clothing and supplies and support for paying bills and food, if needed.
