Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) announces auto insurance refund

All eligible Michigan drivers will receive refunds in March - May, 2022

 

The Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) recently announced all eligible insured Michigan drivers will receive a $400 per-vehicle refund. Michigan consumers who had car insurance as of Oct. 31, 2021, will be eligible to receive refunds from their auto insurance company beginning in March 2022.

Do I qualify for the refund?

All vehicles that were insured as of 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2021 are eligible to receive a refund if the vehicle was covered by a policy that meets the minimum insurance requirements for operating a vehicle in Michigan.

How do I determine if my vehicle was insured?

To confirm if your vehicle was insured, contact your agent.

What are the minimum insurance requirements for operating a vehicle in Michigan?

Vehicles must have personal protection insurance and property protection insurance per MCL 500.3101.

All qualified vehicles are eligible to receive a refund regardless of the PIP medical coverage level chosen on the policy. 3101(1) & 3103(1)

My vehicle was in storage on October 31, 2021 with only comprehensive coverage, though I've carried full coverage on it for many years. Am I eligible for a refund?

No. Vehicles in storage with comprehensive only as of 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2021 are not eligible.

Where and when will I see my refund?

Refunds have been mailed. If you do not receive your refund via US Postal Service by April 4, 2022, please contact your agent.

How much will my refund be?

The refund will be $400 per eligible vehicle. For example, if you had auto insurance policies for two cars as of 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2021, you would receive $400 per vehicle, for a total refund of $800. The refund is $80 per historical vehicle.

Are RVs eligible for the refund?

Yes, RVs are eligible for the $400 refund if the RV was covered by a policy that meets the minimum insurance requirements for operating on Michigan roads.

Are trailers eligible to receive a refund?

No. Trailers are not eligible for the refund.

I have a historic car that is registered and insured as a historic vehicle. Will this historic vehicle qualify for a refund?

Yes. Historic cars will receive a refund of $80 for each historic vehicle insured as of 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2021.

I owned a vehicle insured for many years. I sold it prior to 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2021. Will I get a refund check?

No. Only vehicles that were insured as of 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2021 will qualify for a refund.

How will I receive my refund?

Hastings Mutual will be sending checks out via USPS using the primary address and policyholder on record, regardless of how payments are made on your account.

I changed my insurance provider after October 31, 2021. Will I still receive my refund from Hastings Mutual?

The insurer that insured your vehicle as of 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2021 will be responsible for issuing the refund.

Someone called to confirm my banking information to deposit my refund. Is this legitimate?

No. Hastings Mutual will not be contacting policyholders to receive banking information.

I have moved since October 31, 2021, how will I get my refund?

Checks will be mailed to the address we have on record. To prevent delays in getting your refund, you should contact your agent to ensure the correct information is on file. Also, be sure to follow mail forwarding process with USPS.

Who do I contact if I have a question about my refund?

Contact your agent.

Where can I find out how much I will be receiving?

Unfortunately, the MCCA refund amount will not be reflected within your account on your policyholder dashboard. Please contact your agent for specific details regarding your refund.

Do I need to do anything to receive my refund?

No, If you had an eligible vehicle insured with Hastings Mutual as of 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2021 and you have remained at the address on your policy, you do not need to take any action to receive your refund.

What if my bill comes from my insurance agency instead of Hastings Mutual? Who will send my refund check?

Refunds will be mailed directly from Hastings Mutual, not from your agency.

I lost my refund check. What do I do?

You may contact our Billing Customer Service team at (800) 442-8277 x1337.
Please note, lost or inaccurate checks cannot be re-issued until after April 15, 2022.

Will or can I have the refund applied to future premium?

No, the MCCA is requiring all insurance providers to directly refund the policy holder.
