Nonprofit of the Month: Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan
Jun 29, 2021, 2:07 PM
A year of earning badges, getting ready for camp… and selling cookies.
The Hastings Mutual Insurance Company Charitable Foundation recognizes the contributions of nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve. Each month, we’ll honor one of those organizations as our Nonprofit of the Month.
The Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan do many things for their scouts throughout the year, from group activities to camp. In most years, scouts spend a week on Mackinac Island as part of the Honor Guard, working on their leadership skills while performing
a service project and even leading tour groups during their stay.
Though they might have the interest and enthusiasm for scouting, some girls might not have the money for admission fees or a way to get to meetings. The Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan’s Girl Empowerment Program helps by offering a program
during or after school. It focuses on STEM and outdoor education, life skills, and entrepreneurship. In the 2020 to 2021 school year, most of their meetings have been online and in person while following state health and safety guidelines.
The Girl Empowerment Program supports about 3,500 kindergarten through 9th grade girls from low-income communities as they work to earn their Girl Scout badges and, of course, cookies.
The Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan and the Girl Empowerment Program are supported by Hastings Mutual and
Hylant.
