If you’ll pardon a pun, the amount of hops stored by growers, brewers, and others “grew” 3% from March 1, 2020, to March 1, 2021. That’s in the three northwestern states where most hops are grown, but that’s not the only place you’ll find this key ingredient in beer. More than 2,000 acres of commercial hops are found in other states throughout the country, and about 20% of that is in Michigan, supplying small breweries in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Detroit, and throughout the state.
Hop growers provide an ingredient for the beer, and Hastings Mutual provides the coverage for the hops growers. Our Hop-Up endorsement builds on
our Farmowners insurance with features that help a hop grower’s business.
This includes higher limits for operating and business expenses, as well as signage, transportation, and product recall. Here’s a look at what that means.
If you have to pull your product off the shelves as part of a recall, we’ll pay your costs, from removal to repair to disposal. Note this isn’t for just any reason but is for maybe the most important one: to make sure no one is hurt by eating, drinking, or otherwise using your product.
If something goes wrong with your product and you have to stop your business operations to fix it, you could be missing out on a significant portion of your income. You need to be compensated for your work, and this coverage will help you get back to operating your business or minimize your expenses if your work is put on hold for a while.
We’ll pay up to $2,500 (with a $100 deductible) to repair signs that are damaged. These are signs used in your business or on your farm, like a sign advertising that you have fruits and vegetables for sale.
We’ll pay up to $1,000 for other expenses, which can be above and beyond the coverage you receive for loss of income. It’s meant to help you repair, rebuild, and/or replace property (like a farm vehicle or other equipment) that has been damaged.
Are you growing hops? What should people know about the crop and the work that you do?
