Nonprofit of the Month: Christ Child Society of Detroit

The Hastings Mutual Insurance Company Charitable Foundation recognizes the contributions of nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve. Each month, we’ll honor one of those organizations as our Nonprofit of the Month.

Not every child has a happy, successful home life. That’s where the Christ Child Society of Detroit and their Christ Child House help. The House, located in Detroit, is a place to stay for boys ages 6 to 16. Many have been abused or neglected, and the Christ Child Society offers therapists, youth specialists, and educational professionals to support them and provide a place to stay. Children spend an average of 13 months at the House.

There are also opportunities for children to learn and play together, including art therapy groups and “Heartwarmers,” where a team of volunteers leads everyone through activities like bingo and other games.  



The goal is for children to ultimately return to their family’s home, but that’s not always possible when there’s no family available for the child. The Christ Child Society helps then, too, by assisting with adoptions. The Society provides counseling support for the child and an adoptive parent or parents through the first year of placement. Nearly 100 children and teens have been placed in adoptive homes over the past 25 years.
