Each month, we’ll honor one of those organizations as our Nonprofit of the Month. The young adults who attend The Potter’s House English Language Learner (ELL) Program are from countries around the world: Afghanistan, Brazil, Cameroon, England, Vietnam, Haiti, Nepal, Nicaragua, Mexico, Philippines, and 20 more. Some have lived in the U.S. their entire lives. Others are new immigrants, and some have never been to school.
The Potter’s House a private school with its elementary and middle school in Grand Rapids, MI, and its high school in nearby Wyoming, MI. The high school ELL program is focused on one-on-one education for students with little to no knowledge of English, so they can learn in classes alongside native speakers. In the 2018 to 2019 school year, 56 students were in the high school ELL program, and eight graduated in 2019. All eight were accepted in college or other post-secondary school.
